Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday

You know the drill: Post a link to something you’ve written this week, along with a description. Make it specific; don’t just link to your whole blog.

And happy Father’s Day!

This week I wrote about the bystander effect after an intense nighttime incident involving screams, the police, and my own hesitation. I also commented on Pacific University’s reaction to the date rape that occurred on their campus, and the treatment of the body acceptance movement in the mainstream media.

Win a Sparklette Tag by telling us about one of your African American heroines for our Juneteenth Giveaway!

The Stoning of Soraya M.: The film sets a dismal tone from the very beginning as viewers learn about the violent and humiliating marriage in which Soraya is trapped. Soraya stays with her abusive husband because she lacks the financial resources to raise her daughters without him. When Soraya’s husband fails to force her into a divorce that would free him to marry a fourteen-year-old girl, he begins plotting with other men in the village to falsely accuse her of adultery, and subsequently have her stoned.

The Blue Cotton Gown: A Midwife’s Memoir: Harman is a nurse-practitioner and her memoir tracks a handful of women for approximately a year, zeroing in on the many variables that impact their health and well being: rampant drug and alcohol abuse, poverty, violence, mental illness, and inadequate information about staying healthy, among them. It’s a gripping account.

United States of Tara: Beyond the instructive aspect, however, a quitely overt feminist message is evident in the series. The show starkly reveals a few of the never-ending roles many women are faced with in their daily lives. What woman has not had to “play” several roles, whether it be model homemaker, friend to her teenage daughter, companion to her disaffected husband, and just plain Mom? It is an ingenious ruse to disguise these roles as different personalities of the same woman, but not a far stretch of the imagination.

I’ve been on a roll about socialization and growing up as a transkid this week.
I wrote three pieces that are rather closely related and should proably be read in the order I am presenting them here.
    http://womenborntranssexual.com/2009/06/18/psychology-constructs-the-female/
    http://womenborntranssexual.com/2009/06/20/socialization/
    http://womenborntranssexual.com/2009/06/21/gidget/

women born transsexual have been beaten up about the socialization matter for way too long. We get our socialization from the same places everyone else does.

I wrote a post about how different sorts of oppression resemble or differ from – or in fact involve – each other. It then sparked a series of thoughts which has now splurged into several posts exploring links between (mainly, so far) feminism, animal rights, and communism.

Highlights that may be of interest include how adult-male-human identity is constructed against women and animals, how this turns sex into a resource, producing a ‘class struggle’ between sexual classes, like ‘sluts’ and ‘husbands’, and how ‘owning’ things and ‘fucking’ women are examples of the same thing.

Solid week at Social Science Lite: I discussed the white privilege of anti-white privilege activists: http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/06/white-privilege-of-anti-white-privilege.html

Tony responded with his own reflections on guilt and privilege, touching on the intersectionality of race, class and gender http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/06/reflections-on-privilege-guilt-and.html

I also wrote a piece on racism and Omar Edwards, using a scene from The Wire to pinpoint the intricacies of racism in these country, arguing that it’s much more than just race: http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/06/public-space-and-civic-dilemmas-lessons.html

We had other posts, but these three were the highlight.

Deepa’s Inferno: Domestic Violence and the Indian Diaspora in Heaven on Earth: Couched in a story from Indian mythology, Deepa Mehta’s newest feature film, Heaven on Earth, blurs the line between reality and fantasy to provide a nuanced and authentic look at the struggles of a young Punjabi woman who has immigrated to Canada from her homeland for what turns out to be an abusive marriage. Never one to shy away from heavy and complex issues, Mehta’s film addresses arranged marriage, Indian family dynamics and expectations, domestic violence, and love.

Something about I really don’t think that my sex education class from back in the day was very helpful at all. I’ve had lots of time to reflect on it and… ehh while the class wasn’t strictly abstinence only and I suppose it could have been much worse, it was probably more counter-productive in the long run than anything. Now I’m in a better position to pick it apart & recognize everything that backfired.

Alongtime Republican gay-basher and former wrestler Brian Blair is in jail for two counts of child abuse. Blair punched and choked his two sons.

Blair ran against openly gay Democrat Kevin Beckner and made the Day of Silence a campaign issue.

“Considering the fact that the same school system does not want to allow just one Minute of Silence in the classroom for God, this is preposterous.”

“Can you imagine asking for a ‘Day of Cheer for Heterosexuality?’ If no action is taken to change this policy, then perhaps it is time for another surgical strike from the majority; ‘A Day of Abstention’ from school participation might be considered.”

Blair attempted to prove his tolerance by implying Michael Jackson is a white man.

“There were very few white people in my neighborhood. I didn’t know what prejudice was. Probably the only two white people in my neighborhood were myself and Michael Jackson. My friends were all black. … You’re flat-out wrong.”

Blair is what Florida Republicans consider a family values candidate. Sad.

I recently graduated grad school and so I was finally able to devote more time to my blog last week. Here’s a few of my posts:

Who’s to blame for super-skinny models?: Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman sent letters to top design fashion houses accusing them of “forcing” the British mag to use superskinny models in its fashion shoots. But who’s really to blame for size-zero models? Short answer: We all are.

Food History Blogging: Breakfasts of Champions: Who invented corn flakes? How did the donut get its hole? A look at our evolving notions of breakfast foods by a food historian (me).

Calling out Catcalling: Readers share their experiences about receiving unsolicited comments about their bodies from men, often from positions of power (a car, a building), with the intent to objectify and/or intimidate.

Want to look hot this summer?
