A little off topic, but has anyone read The Purity Myth? If so, would you recommend it?

I’ll admit—I really thought this problem with the fake sex-ed was over, at least!

But see, that’s the problem with the Obama White House—they’ll make a few substantive changes, but they’re too quick to try to compromise with outright bigots, as if the only problem in US politics is a failure of liberals and conservatives to work together (Obama actually argued this in The Audacity of Hope).

No Prez—the problem is that one set of folks wants full reproductive rights and the other side are misogynists who think women are whores till proven otherwise and that pro-choice doctors should be murdered. That’s the difference, and we can’t reach a “middle ground” on that. It’s the same mindset that led to that horrible DOMA brief last week, and then the snide backpedaling a couple days later when LGBT groups screamed bloody murder.

I mean, could the White House AT LEAST get rid of the faith-based initiatives program? Why the hell is there still a “faith-based” funding program anyway?

I’d be willing to wager that it has something to do with black, latino, Catholic, and protestant centrist votes. Bush created the program to funnel cash to friendly faith-based groups, of course Obama is going to use it the same way. Its not like he’s been chomping at the bit to roll back all the shiny new powers Bush dragged into the executive branch. Meet the new boss…

The Purity Myth is definitely worth reading. For example, I did not know that those Purity Balls were federally funded.

I will be talking to Jessica on the 30th of July about the book (and Full Frontal Feminism) at Virtually Speaking.

I think Bristol Palin made it cool again…
