I recently reread Rita Mae Brown’s “Take a Lesbian to Lunch” and started thinking about how many “other people’s movements” I’ve been part of as a WBT (woman born transsexual) that have either excluded me or expected me to give up my identity.

    This week’s entry is
“Take a Woman Born Transsexual to lunch”.

OOOPS The Blacks Are Chatting On Twitter: The trending topics on twitter were African American related due to the BET tribute to Michael Jackson and some saw it as an opportunity to let their inside bigot show

In Praise Of Vibrators: Looking at the ways in which vibrators have been normalized only when it involves heterosexual sex. When it comes to women masturbating they are still a taboo subject.

Hi there! I’m fairly new to the blogosphere but I’ve been reading feministe for a while. I’m excited to finally be able to participate in shameless self-promotion Sunday. This week I wrote a piece on teen sexuality:

    http://hellhathnofury1.blogspot.com/2009/07/why-teen-sex-is-not-immoral-clusterfuck.html

and just this morning I wrote a post critiquing a very deranged conservative woman’s article. Her article is a fairly old piece, but I thought it was worth a bit of commentary:

I commented on a NYT piece on leadership in the gay rights movement, titling my post “Don’t Let Them Jesse Jackson You” (this will be x-posted at postbourgie.com next week): http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/07/dont-let-them-jesse-jackson-you.html

Tony on school policy and removing summer school programs: http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/07/school-is-out.html

And finally, I comment on one of the most touching, yet tragic photos that really captures urban decline beautifully: A photo of legendary Detroit Tiger Alan Trammell watching Old Tiger Stadium be demolished: http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/07/sometimes-even-players-have-to-watch.html

The call for submissions for the 3rd Asian Women Blog Carnival is still up! The theme is the intersection between culture and sexism. We’ve also opened up the carnival to allies, so long as the posts are centered around Asian women.

There hasn’t been a whole lot else feminism-centered, except for this 101 on a theory on how patriarchy became the dominant institution in the world.

I also recently wrote this on Racialicious: The Intersection of Race and Steampunk. A lot of people seem to like it.

In the last week, I started writing up my adventures into the Epistles of the New Testament. The Epistles form the only part of the Bible I haven’t read yet, so this is going to complete my picture of what it actually says (as opposed to what people say it says).

The first is St Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, in which we first encounter St Paul’s homophobia (which I shall discuss more when I write up 1 Corinthians).

In other news, the British Foreign office has made it official policy for diplomats to support LGBT rights even where it will anger the regimes where those diplomats are stationed. I am cautiously optimistic about this.

I complain about people who complain incessantly about the decline in literary reading, their inability to distinguish between literary reading and reading, and the notion that literature is somehow essential to becoming a good person or something.

and, three conversations with my hilarious/smart friend keane:
-about an NYTimes article about New Yorkers who insist on white furniture
-a preview full of dread at learning Caitlin Flanagan has an article about marriage in Time Magazine
-and real-time responses to reading the actual article, part horrified snark and part serious engagement with her argument, with at the end some frustration at the terms set up in advance for these conversations

In Australia, if a couple starves a child/children to death in their house, the (resident) father will garner a verdict of manslaughter while the mother will be convicted of murder.

Win a signed copy of The Blue Cotton Gown!

The Secret Lives of Boys: Inside the Raw Emotional World of Male Teens is exactly the kind of book I love to read. It is a collection of well-written case studies that give the reader a snapshot of teenage boys that most adults today don’t see. Although I’m no longer a teenager, and I’m not male, I do have a younger brother—someone just heading out of his teenage years—and I found myself identifying in some way with each of the ten boys Saval highlights.

Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History is a brilliant book that attempts the “impossible” and succeeds. Using Michel Foucault and Eve Sedgwick as theoretical touchstones, and incorporating Raymond Williams’s “structures of feeling,” Heather Love “feels backward” to reimagine and connect with aspects of a queer past that had been rendered invisible.

Shouting Fire: Stories from the Edge of Free Speech: Perhaps because I was working in the New York City public schools at the time, I was particularly moved by the story of Debbie Almontaser, the founding principal of Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA), an English-Arabic public school in Brooklyn, New York. KGIA is one of sixty-eight dual language schools intended to assist new immigrants with assimilating to their new home and foster an appreciation for the study of Arabic language and culture. Just one month before the school was slated to open, Almontaser was forced to resign as a result of anti-Arab, anti-Muslim fire that was sparked by Rightwing group Stop the Madrassa, fanned by Fox News, and finally made into an inferno by New York Post journalist Chuck Bennett, who took Almontaser’s solicited explanation of the word intifada vastly out of context in order to write a sensationalistic story. The injustice done to Almontaser is devastating, though completely legal according to free speech laws.
