Interesting post. Sherriff Arpaio is really contemptible. He needs to be fully investigated for racial profiling, and other racially charged policies. I think it is inappropriate for a sheriff to demonize any portion of the community that they serve. Everyone in the community should feel that law enforcement is available for their protection.

The fact that Arapio is so popular among his white conservative base is the exact reason why the republican party is losing demographically. I say good riddance.

We have set up a system where the most cruel people are rewarded for their cruelty and then intimidate everyone else into keeping quiet about any preferences for respect or humanity. It’s disgusting — white solidarity in action. I bet you a vast majority of people would actually prefer their peers, their neighbors, to be treated humanely. But they still choose to suppress that instinct and side with the people who are more “like” them even if they’re cruel and despotic. It’s depressing.

I love that this is what my city is popular for. Truly admirable. Nobody gives a damn about rapists and murders so long as those damn Mexicans are being sent back two hours south.

The pathetic thing: people keep re-electing him. And people BELIEVE what he is doing is helping to “clean up the city”.

Arpaio is a card-carrying shithead–one of those fuckwads who likes to pick on people who can’t fight back. Unfortunately, law enforcement seems to attract a lot of people like that.

The ACLU filed a motion against Sheriff Joe on July 1st because he is still hassling female inmates who want abortions. He used to require them to get a court order, and when the courts ruled against him about that, he started making the inmate prepay for transportation and procedure costs. No other inmates are required to prepay, or reimburse the county in any way for medical procedures or even for inmates’ personal visits to sick/dying family members or to funerals.

There’s a whole bunch of links up there thru my user name. :)
