It is Massachusetts not Massachussets.
Whoops, typo.
Already done.
Her campaign has been terrible, and I liked Capuano a whole lot better. That said, we’re voting on political stances, not personalities, and I hope more people take that into consideration for this election.
The polls are now closed.
Not feeling good about this. Some anonymous high-level official in the DNC leaked the feeling of party insiders on this race, calling the Coakley Campaign “the worst debacle in American political history”.
How in the fuck did this thing get screwed up this bad? It’s freaking Massachusetts! Even a minimally competent campaign wouldn’t have blown it this bad.
The bottom line is, no matter how blue your state is, if you only make 19 campaign appearances and your opponent makes 66 campaign appearances in the final month of the campaign, you are asking to lose the election.
Books may be written about what a monstrously incompetent and hubristic effort was put forth by the Democrats in Massachusetts in January 2010.
I hope she wins. I don’t think she will.
I think it’s over. 25% of the vote is counted, and Brown is leading by 5 points.
Jeebus.
I’m having flashbacks to November 2004 when all the Democrats looked at each other and asked, “How the fuck is it possible that we came up with a nominee who could not defeat George Bush?”
She did run a shitty campaign. And I certainly don’t like her very much. I’m sick of having to support the lesser of two evils and I hate that anyone would be so stupid as to take a victory for granted at a time like this. There was a huge bloc of voters sitting around listening to right-wing talk radio, learning about that sneaky Obama and his arrogant policies and deciding it would be cool to be “like, totally disillusioned with him at this point,” and instead of bringing them back to earth she sat back and let them be won over by the oh-so-populist-and-individualistic Fox News-approved alternative.
In all fairness to Coakley, it’s hard to defeat a guy with hair like that.
Seriously, that is a Senatorial head of hair. As a bald guy, I can’t over-stress the importance of good hair.
If the Democrats take this loss as a sign that they now need to cower even more to the whims of conservatives, then fuck it, we may as well concede the midterms now.
The Democrats can read this one of two ways: a) governing like milquetoast bureaucrats who let Republicans dictate the agenda despite being heavily outnumbered is a losing proposition; b) not catering more to the Republicans is a losing proposition.
Guess which one is correct? Guess which one I fear they will take away from this.
I can say this much… if having only 59 Senate seats makes the Democrats behave even more spinelessly in 2010 than they did in 2009, we may need to get accustomed to the following words by January 20, 2013:
Speaker of the House John Boehner
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
President Mitt Romney
Message to Democrats: Start acting like REAL Democrats, or expect to lose more elections to REAL Republicans.
Election is over. No surprises, at least to me.
I expect to see numerous Democratic senators burned alive in the next elections. This is just a sign of things to come.

I hope you’re wrong. I fear you may be right.
Coakley?! Really?!
Coakley was the proverbial lesser of two evils. In fact, the Democrats who came out in force for President Obama stayed home. Evidently, they weren’t feeling Coakley, either. Given the shabby campaign she ran, she didn’t deserve to win.
