So Spain won the World Cup. Mm-hmm.

Shorties – a series of disconnected posts that were each too small to constitute a blog post on their own. The last entry there may be TMI/NSFW due to a frank (but not explicit or sexy) description of a sex act I once performed, sans any analysis.

And there’s always the Weekly Blog Link Roundup.

Musings on Judaism – How do we reconcile Judaism’s modern push for equality and social rights with the Torah’s celebration of racism, sexism, and genocide?

eBooks – The physical book I wanted was eight cents more than the digital copy. Swing and a miss, Amazon.

A Craigslist Adventure – I’ve been experimenting with Craigslist dating. Ridiculous!

Uncovering the Mirrors, Trans Form updates – Info on how my shows are coming along.

This week at Unnatural Forces I wrote about my personal way of dealing with rape and trauma, which is pretty much survival by default, kinda complained about the brain rot that sets in when you are doing un-challenging and un-engaging work (we all know this feeling), and went on a rant about gender, race, law, and the Oscar Grant verdict.

Observations on a sad, telling, quote about her childhood by Olivia Munn. (Yes, her again, but it’s a very specific thing she said that needs to be thoroughly examined as it applies to little girls everywhere).

Power, Knowledge, and Reproductive Privilege, Part I: The Pro-Choice Discourse

What would Foucault have had to say about the pro-choice discourse? Perhaps a better question would be, what would result if his principles were used to analyze it? I try to answer that question.

I’m a performance artist who mixes burlesque, physical theatre, political comment, feminism, and anti-racism in my work. I recently participated in the Queensland heats of the Miss Burlesque Australia competition (part talent show, part beauty pageant). My participation in the competition – not just as an actively outspoken and political performer, but also as a minority – was interesting, to say the least.

I wrote about using the Miss Burlesque Australia platform to add diversity to populist ideas of burlesque in The Scavenger. Here are the videos from the night; of particular note is Lullaby, an updated version of a routine I debuted last year that dealt with the intersection between my Muslim upbringing, my current journey, and the preconceptions people have about the two.

Reverse Racism Apparently Still needs an Explanation: Looking at why it is necessary to acknowledge the difference between racism and prejudice.

This week at Planning the Day in Cambodia:

We recently trained new trainers to help us present workshops about women’s health in villages. One of my trainers called to tell me she couldn’t make it, because she has to cross over to Thailand to look for work.

I had $400 stolen from my room by a staff member where I work. She was about to go to jail because of all the debt she incurred to take care of her dying mother. So how should we have responded?

A new study finds a correlation between countries’ disease burdens (especially malaria and childhood diarrhea) and IQ – but given the racist history of IQ scores, is the study meaningful?

A round up of posts that are worth your time about racist reporting, the effect of Honduras’ coup on women, developments in the investigation of the 1989 murder of the Jesuits in San Salvador, and the TED mini-conference.

(Now for the entertainment news portion of our segment!)

A few weeks ago I wrote about Lady GaGa taking pictures with Terry Richardson for July’s Rolling Stone Magazine. It’s left me a little blindsided as a feminist and as a fan of GaGa. This past week her stylist posted pictures of and taken by Terry Richardson.

In both posts linked above I talk about how this feels to a feminist GaGa fan, and question GaGa’s claim as a feminist.

It’s Only Fifteen Pounds Christina Hendricks: Christina Hendricks gained 15 pounds and felt gorgeous, but we’re still pretty far from body acceptance.

Cosmopolitan August 2010: Repackaged Sex Tips and the Photoshopped Head of Britney Spears: The August 2010 issue of Cosmopolitan is more of the same–sex tips they’ve been featuring for years with a dose of woman shaming.

Instead of “Violet Tendencies”, Mindy Cohen Should Go Back To The Facts of Life: Mindy Cohen is turning 40 and she is single. This of course is the worst thing ever and this movie is all about the gay BFF–and it is a hot mess from beginning to end.

Bristol Palin’s Vacant and Kind of Creepy Appearance on The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Bristol Palin appeared in an episode of The Secret Life of the American Teenage for 1 minute and 16 seconds too long.

Hot in Cleveland is NOT so Hot: Turns out the new show with Betty White is just a contrived, updated Golden Girls.

Eat Pray Love: In Theaters August 13th: The new trailer for Eat Pray Love has been released and if nothing else, it looks gorgeous.

Big Brother Season 12 We’re Watching: We’re watching (and chatting about) the 12th season of Big Brother. The consensus so far: Bad bad bad.

Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance Computer Generated Eyes Spark Potentially Dangerous and Pretty Ridiculous Trend: Lady Gaga’s eyes in the Bad Romance music video were computer-generated, but that isn’t stopping people from wearing dangerous contact lenses that could potentially lead to blindness to copy the look.

    Feminist Review 7.11.2010 at 10:28 pm |

Feminist Review is giving one of our readers a chance to win an Eco Friendly Lunch Box, courtesy of EasyLunchBoxes.com. The prize includes a container set and one lunch bag (you choose the color!).

Forced to Care begins with a look at those who are responsible for the lion’s share of caregiving in America. Glenn’s findings basically confirm what most of us know already: in most cases, women of color, women at the low end of the socioeconomic scale, and illegal immigrants are the ones caring for our nation’s young, disabled, and elderly.

Female Nomad and Friends: Tales of Breaking Free and Breaking Bread Around the World is an absolute treat for women who love to travel and connect with new people. Even for those who simply dream about it, but don’t have the means or the fearlessness to travel to exotic places, this book offers funny stories, unbelievable adventures, and… recipes.

Unapologetic. Raw. Honest. The third issue of Voces Zine is a collection of poetry by artists from different communities—indigenous, people of color, trans, and queer—sharing their experiences as survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Originally inspired by a small community of Latino immigrants, this issue represents a first-time inclusion of contributors from outside of its original roots.

Our Porn, Ourselves: Erika Lust on the Future of Porn
Erika Lust is something of a film connoisseur—and her genre of choice is porn. An award-winning director and co-founder of Lust Films in Barcelona, Erika knows the (ahem!) ins and outs of the adult film biz, but she isn’t pleased with a lot of what she sees. While big tits, money shots, bad acting, and fake orgasms might pique men’s erotic interests, Lust believes films that satisfy women’s needs require something different.

Grim Sleeper Case Put to Rest
Since 1985, a man the Los Angeles Police Department dubbed the “Grim Sleeper” has killed at least ten Black women and girls, and one Black man, who lived in the same low-income area on the South side of L.A. Many of the women were prostitutes and most of the victims died by the same gun. Why it took twenty-five years for the LAPD to identify former trash collector Lonnie David Franklin, Jr., whose familial DNA led to this week’s arrest, is now being sorted out.

Caster Semenya Is Back on Track
When the test results came in, Semenya discovered that she is intersex, and the life changing news was difficult for the young track star to bear. Although the IAAF agreed to allow Semenya to keep her medal and the prize money in November, it wasn’t until yesterday that she was granted the right to compete in future competitions as a woman. The ruling is effective immediately.
