Hello all! My name is Shani and I’d like to send many thanks to Jill for inviting me to guest.
It’s always so hard to write a bio post — I never know whether to be clever or straightforward. But my about-me goes a little something like this: I currently work as the associate editor at CampusProgress.org. In my spare time I blog at PostBourgie, the place that helped me become a better writer, with former Feministe guest bloggers G.D. and Jamelle Bouie (and an outstanding group of folks). I’ve written and/or guest blogged around the progressive innanet for Ta-Nehisi Coates, Spencer Ackerman, The Atlantic, and The American Prospect. Also, I totally just started a hair tumblr (I think I may explain why in a post this week). And you can find me on the Twitter, here.
The one good thing about bio posts is that you get to talk about yourself shamelessly. If you’re into that sort of thing, that is. In that spirit, I’m just going to list some of my favorite things — and I’d love for you to do so in the comments.
Food: curry goat (my mom is Jamaican)
Song/Singer: Sophisticated Lady, Ella Fitzgerald
Book: Main Street
Musical: Jesus Christ Superstar
More of my preferences will be revealed over the next two weeks, but more importantly, I hope to have a few good conversations with you all.
(Oh, and by the way, I’ll be guest-blogging at The American Prospect’s TAPPED blog this week as well, so feel free to stop by there. And if you’re into progressive policy, you should be reading it anyway.)

I like Ella Fitgerald. Cool. I like your hair tumblr site.
Welcome Shani! I also love goat curry… if you know a good place to get it in NY, pass it on.
Curry goat? Oh, you’d be jealous of what I had to eat this weekend.
But since you’re asking …
Food: Beef enchiladas.
Song/Singer: Almost anything by Stevie Wonder
Book: I didn’t know reading would be required. But probably, since I’m a Texas native and a recovering jock, “Friday Night Lights.”
Meh to musicals.
Looking forward to reading you this week, Shani!
Just from reading your short list of favorites, I’m so ready to be your newest best friend! I can’t wait to read more from you!
Jesus Christ Superstar for the win! the 1973 movie has been one of my favourite things since I was about six.
[...] Speaking of PB alums, Shani is guest-blogging at TAPPED and Feministe this week. Read her! [...]
Definitely will be checking out your Tumblr. Also, I automatically think you’re cool because Ella Fitzgerald is a goddess. And I guess I’ll hop on board with the favorite stuff since you’re asking…
Food: Steamed pork buns
Song/Singer: Hamsafar by Christopher Tin (sung by Sussan Deyhim), and Ella Fitzgerald
Book: It changes, but right now I’m a big fan of Einstein’s Cosmos by Michio Kaku.
Musical: Hardest question ever. If I had to pick one, I’d go with Les Miserables, though In the Heights, Cabaret, anything Stephen Sondheim has done, and Little Shop of Horrors are up there too.
Can’t wait to read your posts!
I’m a Trini in Exile… in Oklahoma, of all places! Love curry goat – and the fruit we just can’t get here. I dig your hair tumblr. Welcome!
Food: gee, this is a hard one cuz i like lots of foods! but if i gotta pick just one…burger and fries at Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan!
Song: again, hard to pick just one so i’ll pick two…”Closer to Fine” by the Indigo Girls and “Box of Rain” by the Good Ole Grateful Dead
Book: once again, do i have to pick just one??? “Whipping Girl” by Julia Serano is a GREAT book by and about transgendered women (of which i am one) and i also like what i have read of Thomas Pynchon…oh, and also the Beat Generation authors especially dear old Allen Ginsberg, who had the courage to be openly gay back in the 1950s.
not really into musicals, but i will add a couple of categories…
Basketball player: Deanna Nolan of the (formerly) Detroit Shock and from Flint, Michigan…#14 on her jersey, #1 in my heart!
College sports teams, all women’s and men’s sports: Michigan Wolverines and Central Michigan Chippewas
United Statesian pro football: Green Bay Packers always and forever!
