Like Sloane Crosley, I am a New York City cat lady, at least insofar as I own one cat. Just one. And I wish he were a dog. But cats do make much more sense in the city.

I really appreciated the focus on how people don’t get labeled as “crazy” dog people. The only time I really hear dog owners get mocked is when they have the little purse-sized dogs wearing diamond collars or whatever. But cat owners….we can’t even mention we have a cat without people calling us crazy cat people and teasing and rolling their eyes. I really don’t get it.
I love both dogs and cats, but I also live in a city (SF) and live alone and am gone at work for about 9 hours a day on weekdays…owning a dog would be way too impractical. Plus in SF, it’s hard to find any apartments that allow them, let alone affordable ones.
I love my damn cat and eff anyone who makes fun of that :)
I so wish I weren’t allergic to cats. I’d get one in a minute.
Haha – I *am* allergic :P Maybe I really am a crazy cat lady….
I probably fit the “cat lady” description: single, nearing middle age, live in an apartment… If it were practical (and my landlord allowed it), I’d have a dog and a cat. I live in the Midwest, where dog owners outnumber cat owners, so yeah, I hate that stereotype — and the not so veiled sexism — of the crazy cat person.
I love the photo. Even as kittens the species has a sense of drama and humor.
If you have a cat but would rather have a dog, you are a cat owner but not a cat lady. True cat ladies could love no other animal the way they love a cat, simply because cats are the most marvellous animals on the planet.
I would have a cat if any animals were allowed in the building. I like to joke that if they allow crying children, they ought to allow pets too.
That little girl in the photo, looks like me when I was that little!
Cats beating up/scaring babies are always funny.
I have relatives that are crazy dog owners… and they should be called out!
There’s some montage of cats doing funny things, but the part that makes me laugh out loud is always the part where the cat pounces out of nowhere and takes out the toddler.
You are not a cat lady if you actually want a dog, or if you have any fewer than 3 cats. And 3 cats is only borderline. If you want to be certifiable, it’s safer going the no fewer than 4.
If you’re going to be a cat lady, you gotta know the rules.
I’m so far gone I call my cats “the babies”. No, I do not insist people treat them like children. That’s just too much.
