I just saw this and it made me sad. I saw her perform once; she blew me away, of course, she blew everybody away, but I was too young to realize how lucky I really was.

I’ve been listening to my Etta station on Pandora today, and it’s remarkable how she stood out in genres of music dominated by men, r&b and soul. The station plays her and Aretha Franklin and a few other women, but mostly a lot of fellas, like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding. Aaron Neville, etc.

I saw her at Jazz Fest a couple of years ago. What a voice!

I had taken it for granted that she had died years ago. Shows what I know.

PeggyLuWho, that tells you something about Pandora more than it does the number of many fabulous women in soul. Candi Staton, Bettye Swann, Tammi Terrel, Esther Phillips is just to start the list.

None of that diminishes Etta James fabulousness, of course!
