I reviewed the melancholy (and quite beautiful) film ‘The Deep Blue Sea:’

Why is everyone so shocked that Joe Paterno would prioritize football over innocent lives? It’s not as though it had never happened before:

Thanks as always. Happy Sunday.
I wrote about the Everyday Sexism project, and the impact of women telling their stories of misogyny, street harrassment, and day-to-day discrimination,
Stuff I’ve written lately:
Petition to free Alexander Aan : A plea to sign a petition to the Obama administration to address a man beaten and imprisoned in Indonesia for blasphemy
Gay rights or chicken sandwiches? : On Chick-fil-A founder Dan Cathy’s statement of pride in opposing gay rights, and why it’s fundamentally dishonest
How not to protest Chick-fil-A : On Boston mayor Thomas Menino’s stated refusal to allow Chick-fil-A to establish businesses in his city
Tragedy and the ongoing internet circus : On the predictable internet response to news of the Aurora shootings
Weekend web readin’ : A compilation of links and quotes from notable recent stories elsewhere on the web
A rampage killer and the problem of “evil” : On the moral and psychological significance of labeling someone evil, and what’s wrong with it
I wrote about consent, abusive relationships, instincts and udon noodles over at the old jaw jaw.
A rant about the cultural attitudes surrounding mixed-gender relationships (particularly among heterosexual people): http://mellowness.dreamwidth.org/2938.html

This is mostly of interest to my fellow Arizonans:
We’re continuing our “Meet Our Candidates” series, this time with interviews with Tucson’s Dustin Cox (LD 9), Lela Alston from Phoenix/Scottsdale (LD 24), and West Valley’s Martín Quezada (LD 29).
We also published a Voter FAQ of sorts, which is mostly, but not completely, Arizona-centric. However, even if you’re not in AZ you might like to use it as inspiration to write a similar post for your blog, with information specific to your state.
A feminist (ish) review of Legally Blonde! It might surprise you …
I’ve discovered that the longer a blog comment is, the more likely it is to be dismissive or a derail, particularly during a conversation about sexism.
In Doth not protest too much, I look at some of the ways long comments (not blog posts, but comments) go wrong, and make a suggestion for how to check if what you are writing is hampering conversation.
An argument over whether “WET” would be the same as BET prompts me to look at the gender and racial representation of IMDB’s most popular tv shows.
I also wrote a post about how the backlash over Obama’s “you didn’t build that” comment points to a tension between individualism and community in the American Dream.
I was young and innocent. I needed the paycheck. The boss was standing way too close and he had awful breath…
The Rainbow vs Fifty Shades of Grey
In the UK, girls are being preventative health care (vaccinations) on religious grounds.
There isn’t really much difference between fanatics/fundamentalists of different religions
Not exactly related to the usual topics here, but the world changes a lot slower than you think.
So I wrote two things this week, yay! The first was on charity vs. solidarity, and why I think the distinction & the latter are more important. The second was about how a 17-year-old survivor of a sexual assault is facing charges for naming her attackers on Twitter and how I think that’s absurd, regardless of her attackers’ age and the plea agreement reached.
I finally got really negative comments on my blog. Hey, it happens!
One person suggested I get off my soapbox and have a bit of fun. And
I may have taken their advice too far. WAAAAY too far. Ahem.
The result? My Feminist Soapbox.
Our “true price” activity is a keystone to humane education because it brings deeper awareness to human rights, environmental protection & animal protection, and helps us identify how we can be changemakers: http://humaneconnectionblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/true-price-keystone-humane-education.html
The high cost of cheap clothes: have you paid attention to what you’re buying when you jump on those bargains?: http://humaneconnectionblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/the-high-cost-of-cheap-clothes.html
Senseless domestic terror with numbing predictability. Why?
In light of her death earlier this week, I wrote a short post about Kitty Wells and country music’s covert feminism.
For the Feminist Odyssey Blog Carnival, I analyzed the role of women in some of my favorite films, deeply lamenting the lack of a woman-centered zombie movie — but thanking the deity for Miss Piggy.
Also, thinking about the backyard where I grew up, how it’s changed in the 30 years I’ve known it, and how I’ve changed. (Well, the beginning of a series. It’s a lot of changes to write about.)
Finally, questioning an online acquaintance’s assertion that Fat Cow is a standard asana descriptor. (I am legit open to being wrong on this, but evidence has turned up little reason to be — and much reason to be skeptical.)
I write an internet open letter to the crying white woman in blackface.

I shared the top 5 reasons I’m afraid of being pregnant, which sparked a lively discussion and helped me not feel alone in this.
For much of my life I thought my name, which means “God is my Judge,” was akin to “God is my Judge-r.” Now I realize that it means “God is my Advocate for Justice.” What does your name mean?

Which kinds of bodies are respected?: Tracking marginalisation through touch and distance.
Working towards the positive: Feminism isn’t just about fighting specific battles, but about shifting fundamental approaches to living.
In sexism and asexuality, part two, I examine the misconception that asexual women have a patriarchy-approved sexuality.
This week I covered TDKR, did a couple of book reviews, reflected upon VH1′s heinous “reality” shows, and dropped a line about Sarah Silverman’s “Scissor Sheldon” project.

Sadly, my Tumblr on sexism I find around the Internet is doing quite well. I may have to bump it up from two posts a day to three posts as day as I have quite a long queue of things to post.
Sadly.

Why I Can’t Watch “Futurama” Anymore
In light of recent events and in memory of the events in Norway last year, I wrote a post about masculinity and violence:

A post on tone arguments and why feminism can’t have nice things.
A quick note to Penn State.

Another letter to Louis C.K.
Making white boys feel great about themselves at everyone else’s expense.
Sexy orcs in World of Warcraft.
Congratulations to the Boy Scouts of America.
This week I wrote about the gendered representation of professional cooking on TV shows like Masterchef, and how it’s dominated by men, even though cooking has traditionally been seen as “women’s work.”
And I unpack the awesomeness that is Katara from Avatar: the Last Airbender as the first part of a series on feminist in books and on TV.
And in the online zine of my uni’s Women’s Collective, I wrote about women in Rome and the very different ways they are presented, and argue that their characters are probably meant to reflect their male counterparts more than their own personalities.
When I come around for SSPS, I’m usually linking to my blog ethecofem, but this time I wanted to let everyone know about an upcoming new project I’m working on with some friends called Paper Revolution. It’s a community blog with forums and op-ed style writing, and will also feature grassroots campaigns and scores of other things we’re still in the process of setting up. The blog/magazine will center around “lefty” issues and, as it was founded by two Minneapolis Occupy organizers, issues discussed within the Occupy movement such as equality, social justice, economic justice, anarchism, and activism. There isn’t much content yet, but stay tuned for our launch in a week or two.
Also, we’d love to feature guest posts and art, poetry, and other submissions regularly, so if you’re interested in submitting your work, please email contact[at]paperrevolution[dot]org
Bonjour everyone,
This week I grumbled about people who don’t get satire.

Why I hate Tumblr

This week on the Jewish Currents blog I wrote about an awesome vintage Israel social studies textbook from 1968 that I found. It has pictures of SCARY ARABS, pictures of ARABS BECOMING CIVILIZED, and an overall very interesting interpretation of history.
I’m helping write A Steampunk’s Guide to Sex, which will be coming out this Fall on Combustion Books, “a collectively-run publisher of dangerous fiction.” Electrical sex-machines; kinky history; olde-tymey underwear; Victorian genital piercings; and historical and contemporary takes on queer love, polyamory, sex work, smut, and consent.
It’s one in an upcoming series of “Guides”, and follow-up to A Steampunk’s Guide to the Apocolypse!
The worst Iphone app of all time – The Wonder Clock. Just in case your biological clock isn’t ticking loud enough…

I’ve been writing sci-fi/fantasy book reviews and trying to make a point of including warnings at the top for elements that might trigger people. These genres tend to have nasty surprise rape or torture scenes, or sleazy romanticizing of dubious consent, so I call that out in every review for a problematic book.
http://redpenreviews.blogspot.com/
I’m also slowly adding YA to my rotation: the Hunger Games review is here.

I am gonna be posting about this on my blog later today. This is about misogynistic comments and vile tweets that fans of Kevin Harvick sent to Amber Cope’s twitter account after the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Loudon, N.H. on July 14. http://www.courier-journal.com/usatoday/article/803974?odyssey=obinsite
“The Risk of a Kiss (part 2)” continues from last week’s lesbian mod squad scene when we approached Gay Basher. I wish this post ended as gloriously as it begins.
I have a new portfolio for my photography work:

If you comment I will check out your site too. :)
I wrote about the ridiculous editor’s letter in this month’s issue of Elle magazine, which makes light of eating disorders and how photoshopped models in magazines may contribute.
Also, why you should boycott Chick-Fil-A.
And now, as promised on Aiken Area Progressive.
Motorsport Misogyny: Tweets Attack Amber Cope for maintaining speed at Loudon, N.H. http://t.co/Gm5RoApG
Also, a few weeks ago, I started a change.org petition calling on the Federal Highway Administration to make their signs more consistent with their sign group. Among the items I am calling for is to make red retroreflective strips exclusive to STOP signs, make the minimum 6 inch letter height requirement that they eliminated on May 14 a standard statement instead of a guidance statement for all highways that have a speed limit of 30 mph or greater, create a standard that clearly states that political boundaries like “Town Limit” be in mixed-case, and create a standard that the lettering on all regulatory and warning signs be in all uppercase letters – including the names of places, streets and highways that appear on regulatory and warning signs.
Standardized road signs IS a FEMINIST issue as well.

I write about whether US state and local governments could declare their debts illegitimate. These debts are bankrupting things like libraries, police fire departments, senior centers etc. And they are, in many cases, the product of financial fraud.
