Feminism: Getting ‘em young
That kid rocks my world. I love that she identifies feeling that the toy companies are “tricking” people with the pink toys/princesses are for girls nonsense, and I love that she identifies the binary as being pink for girls and other colours for boys. [S]he clearly understands the concepts, feels strongly about them, and is articulating them clearly. That’s awesome.

Man oh man. I appreciate all your insightful comments on my post about Kathleen Parker last Friday afternoon. There was a lot of blogosphere anger directed at Parker from many different blogs and media outlets, so one would think maybe she’d get it by then. And write a follow-up apologizing. I guess that was too [...]

The following quote is from Stephen Moyer AKA vampire Bill compton in the series True Blood. Epilogue: Stephen Moyer, on Vampire Sex: “The thing about vampirism is that it taps into a female point of view – you have an old-fashioned gentleman with manners who is a fucking killer… it’s an interesting duality, because in [...]

For Blue Eyes: Pecola Breedlove Lives
If a Black girl is very lucky she is born into a family that will cherish her. She will be told repeatedly that she is beautiful, even that she is a princess. Those first years are very important in building a solid self-esteem. They will be needed to help deal with the stressful years ahead, [...]

Women Athletes: Choose Between Strong and Sexy
Laurie and Debbie say: (Cross-posted to Body Impolitic.) Unusualmusic, blogging at The Angry Black Woman, has an excellent initial post on what we expect American women athletes to look like, and live like. One of the great problems that women athletes face is the idea that women are heterosexual sex objects. And the beauty ideal [...]

As I’ve mentioned before (and, as is obvious to anyone who’s read my blog,) I have a bit of a thing for mysteries and hardboiled noir. I’m by no means an expert on either genre, admittedly, but it’s a hobby interest of mine. I just really love the way gender plays out in them: in [...]

So will re-claiming my status as a college freshman get me out of these law school loans?
I know the “second virginity” craze is nothing new, but the whole thing strikes me as ridiculous and sad enough to merit comment. Virginity fetishism is at heart about the idea that women are objects, and that those objects become less valuable when they’ve been “used” by someone else. A shiny new hymen on your [...]

In These Times has a fantastic article about the effect of the “war on drugs” on women. The article is especially good about explaining how a variety of social justice issues converge in the female prison population — it’s about legal justice, reproductive justice, economic justice and racial justice. For example: One such woman, Danielle [...]

I have a piece up in Alternet about the feminist vote on Super Tuesday. I don’t stake out much of a position; it’s more an outline of where feminists are falling and what the divisive issues are. Also worth checking out: Robin Morgan’s Goodby to All That (part 2), about why she’s voting for Clinton, [...]
